Glutathione is an amino acid that is primarily synthesized in the liver. It is involved in DNA synthesis and repair, protein and prostaglandin synthesis, amino acid transport, metabolism of toxins and carcinogens, immune system function, prevention of oxidative cell damage, and enzyme activation. There is interest in using glutathione to lighten the skin. A small clinical study in Filipino females with brown or dark brown skin shows that taking glutathione 500mg daily for 8 weeks lightens the skin when compared with baseline. Also, a small clinical study in Indonesian females shows that taking oral glutathione 600mg, for 8 weeks lightens skin and reduces melanin index.
